Guido Zuliani (Cooper Union, NY): One Life. But we are not the same. Observations on the architectural oeuvre of Joghn Hejduk

The whole Ouvre of the American architect John Hejduk, spanning with consistent progression the entire second half of the 20th century, is the result of a long and intense artistic and intellectual journey that extends from the immediate post-war era to the threshold of the new millennium.  Hejduk’s unbroken series of highly original and emblematic projects collected in more than 20 volumes, each of them treated as the development of a specific conceptual reflection, constitutes one of the most lucid, intellectually coherent and provocative artistic investigation on the nature, destiny and possibility of architecture, and of the artistic work in general, in the context of late-capitalist society.  In his work it is the complementarity of a philosophic and a poetic approach to architecture as theoretical practice that is at the origin of the production of one of the most original body of work in the history of architecture. The talk will develop around the conceptual significance of the series of urban propositions that following Hejduk’s radical critique of architecture’s referent – space as metaphysical ground of the project - defined a fundamental reframing of the meaning of the architect’s work and its objectives. The projects developed between the mid ‘70s and the late’80s, between Venice, Berlin and Riga, question not only the nature and configuration of the architectural project itself, but , and more essentially, its very ontological foundation projected as it is against the background of the city as the site of an irreducible multiplicity, the locus of the multitude.
