Varieties of Creativity in Art

Part of the reason why art is such a challenging and interesting topic is the various types of creativity found in it, which are used to develop novel features in artworks, interpretations of artworks, and methods for producing artworks. Many of the creative processes and products in art have analogues in other disciplines, but art seems to have the greatest diversity and scope in the types of creativity it employs. This paper will attempt to distinguish the general types of creativity in art and clarify their relations, and will do so by connecting them with corresponding varieties of explanation.

Rex Gilliland is an Associate Professor of Philosophy at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven, Connecticut, USA. His research focuses on the history and meaning of the concept of creativity, as well as Heidegger and Poststructuralism.
