Urban transformation with Nature-based Solutions – Can nature work with us?

As early-career scientists we seek to establish our own and independent network of scholars, leaving familiar schools of thought in order to create and develop innovative ideas out of our usual box of thinking. For this reason, we intentionally gathered as a group without any earlier personal or institutional cooperation. This newly established alliance allows us to build a network of networks in order to develop new, innovative ideas that in our individual networks are often not directly addressed. Although we all investigate in the field of socio-ecology, we represent an international team of interdisciplinary character including expertise from Ecological Engineering, Architecture, Geography, and Civil Engineering.
We meet with our common research interest in the socio-ecological reshaping of urban areas, but still have complementary research focus regarding different spatial scales (from the building level over the neighbourhood to the city-wide level) and different perspectives (socio-economic evaluation, participatory co-design, multi-functional integration, …). Our individual experiences with different case studies enriches our network further and enables us to comprehensively address cross-national and cross-city comparisons of societal challenges and to develop sustainable solutions. The inclusion of researchers from different careers levels (assistant professors and PhD) allows us to develop the network as well in the context of career building and bridging.
The PhD level will benefit largely from the connection with PhD students supervised in similar fields of research by the assistant professors. The assistant professor will benefit from the network building with colleagues at the same career level, but independent from inherited networks. These networks bear the potential for a long-lasting collaboration and common career development.

- Dr. Joana Guerrin, Senior researcher at the Dutch Research Institute for Transitions (DRIFT), Erasmus University Rotterdam, the Netherlands.The research group will be visiting the Scienza Nuova Institute, in Turin, from May 23 to May 27, 2022
