Affective Installation Art

This talked is based on a paper I am writing with Javier Leñador González Torres (University of Seville). We look at recent philosophical debate on affective scaffolding and affective artefacts and argue that some works of installation art are affective artefacts. We submit that affective works of installation art (1) enhance self-knowledge; (2) contribute to our sense of self, under certain circumstances; (3) are sometimes designed to generate not only first-order, but also second-order affective responses. Our proposal seeks to cast light on both the workings of installation art and the varieties and potentialities of affective artefacts.

Elisa Caldarola is tenure-track Faculty at the University of Turin. Previously, she held positions at Ca' Foscari University, Venice and the University of Padua, and she was Fulbright Scholar at the University of Maryland. From November 2023 she will be Marie Skłodowska Curie Fellow at CUNY's Graduate Center. She works on issues in philosophy of art and mind, and in metaphysics.
