The musical Dynamic of Meaning
The articulation of the conceptual connection between music and metaphysics can be developed at different levels. The concept of “dynamis” represents a perfect topic to reflect on this articulation. For what reason, and by virtue of what semantic itinerary, do we name, with a term taken from metaphysics, the musical dimension of the intensity of sound? It is clear that at the heart of this link lies the concept of “force”. Even before naming “potentiality” in a metaphysical sense, dynamis indicates “strength”, “power”. It is in this sense that we refer to a high-intensity sound as “forte” (f). But is this connection really that obvious? On closer inspection, this link intertwines the whole history of Western reflection on strength/power/potentiality, seeing in the realm of music a privileged place to articulate an “ontology of power”. Do not forget that in Greek “dynamis” has also the sense of "meaning". It will then be a question of investigating how music can be the fundamental place for thinking of the ontological connection between “meaning” and “power”.
L’articolazione del nesso concettuale tra musica e metafisica può essere sviluppato a diversi livelli. Il concetto di dynamis si presta particolarmente bene a pensare tale articolazione. Per quale ragione, e in virtù di quale itinerario semantico, nominiamo, con un termine tratto dalla metafisica, la dimensione musicale dell’intensità del suono? È chiaro che al centro di questo legame sta il concetto di “forza”. Dynamis, prima ancora di nominare la potenzialità in senso metafisico, indica la forza, la potenza. È in questo senso che indichiamo come “forte” (f) un suono ad alta intensità. Ma tale nesso è davvero così ovvio? A ben guardare, questo legame intreccia tutta la vicenda della riflessione occidentale sul nesso tra forza/potenza/potenzialità, indicando nella musica un luogo privilegiato per pensare un’”ontologia della potenza”. Non si dimentichi che in greco “dynamis” vale anche “significato”. Si tratterà allora di indagare in che modo la musica possa essere il luogo fondamentale per pensare il nesso ontologico tra “senso” e “potenza”.
PIER ALBERTO PORCEDDU CILIONE is Research Fellow of Aesthetics at the University of Verona (Department of Human Sciences) and teaches Education and Artistic Languages at the Academy of Fine Arts in Verona (Italy). He studied at the Università Statale in Milan, the University of Verona and the Freie Universität in Berlin. His main research interests include Aesthetics, Morphology, Philosophy of Music and Philosophy of Culture. Three monographs have recently appeared: La terra e il fuoco. Antinomie della cultura [The Earth and the Fire. Antinomies of Culture] (Mimesis, Milan 2017); La formatività assoluta. Per una fisica dell’arte [The absolute Formativity. For a Physics of Art] (Orthotes, Naples-Salerno 2018); and Tradurre la musica. Goethe e la West-Eastern Divan Orchestra [Translating Music. Goethe and the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra] (Quiedit, Verona 2019).
