Aesthetic Eating and Authenticity

Contemporary aesthetics has become more and more open to searching for aesthetic features in objects and processes situated beyond the traditionally established realms of art and nature. It is not surprising then, that this tendency is also present in the philosophy of food where the aesthetic and artistic dimensions of gustatory taste are investigated. Appreciating that, the goal of this paper is to critically analyse the recently emerged notion of “the fine art of eating” (Shusterman 2016) and propose a new approach for understanding the act of eating which I call “aesthetic eating”. I shall consider aesthetic eating within the framework of expressive authenticity. In particular, I focus on the so-called “acquired taste”, that is, the phenomenon where one makes a decision to like something that s/he does not fancy. I try to suggest that via aesthetic eating we are able to shape our authentic aesthetic personality since all our aesthetic choices are manifestations of our inner self.
