Universe, Music and Souls: The Notion of Harmony in Schelling and Herder

In Ancient Platonism the musical harmony was conceived as an instrument to establish measure, order, and proportion in the universe, as well as in the human soul. During the eighteenth century these ideas were examined by many German philosophers under new perspectives, also with respect to the scientific discoveries on the universe and on human knowledge of that time. This paper focuses on the notion of harmony in Schelling’s comment on Plato’s Timaeus (1794) as well as in the sixth issue of Herder’s journal Adrastea (1802). The aim of the talk is to investigate the various receptions and transformations of Platonic ideas concerning harmony in the work of these two authors.

After receiving her PhD in Philosophy at the University of Cagliari and the Friedrich-Schiller University in Jena, Laura Follesa has been Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow at the FSU and the editor of some volumes such as Il pensare per immagini (Lang 2019), Platonism: Ficino to Foucault (Brill 2020), and, together with F. Vercellone, Bilddenken und Morphologie (De Gruyter, 2021). She is now working on cosmological conception in Eighteenth and early Nineteenth century Germany within an ERC Starting Grant Group (Project PROTEUS) at the Autonomous University of Barcelona and in cooperation with the University of Milan.
